Since the fall of President Ershad at the end of 1990, the press has enjoyed almost total political independence. Of the daily newspapers, the 11 English-language titles tend to appeal primarily to the urban elite. Among political weeklies, the most respected is called "Holiday" (the owners bought it as a travel magazine and decided not to change the name). Over 70% of TV programs are produced locally; about one-third are in black and white.
